Facts
- Circle centres sit on a hexagonal lattice, the densest way to pack equal circles.
- Each circle meets six neighbours through their centres: 6 petals per circle.
- The Fruit of Life, Metatron’s Cube and Tree of Life are all drawn from its points.
- Seen in 3D, the same lattice is the densest packing of spheres (Kepler’s conjecture).
History and meaning
The name was popularised in the 1990s, but the pattern is ancient: it is painted on granite in the Temple of Osiris at Abydos (around the 2nd century BCE or later), and Leonardo da Vinci studied its geometry in the Codex Atlanticus.
