The Jitterbug
Vector equilibrium → icosahedron → octahedron
Buckminster Fuller’s pulsing structure: twelve spheres of the vector equilibrium twist and contract through the icosahedron into the octahedron. Animate the phase and watch it breathe.

Facts
- The eight triangles never change size: they only twist and move inward.
- At phase ≈ 0.382 (= 1 − 1/φ) the twelve points form a perfect icosahedron.
- The vector equilibrium (cuboctahedron) is the only shape whose edges equal its radius.
- Fuller saw it as nature’s zero point: the balance from which every form contracts.
History and meaning
Fuller demonstrated the jitterbug with flexible models in the 1940s and built his synergetic geometry around it.
